2019-2020 Athletic Year in Review

To say the year was an interesting one, might be a bit of an understatement. The loss of the Spring season definitely put a damper on the year. Especially when we were expected to field some very strong teams in the spring. However, as we look back at the Fall and Winter seasons, it was another fantastic year for Damascus Athletics.

We hit the ground running in the Fall of 2019. Both girls soccer (Coach Kovack) and girls cross country (Coach Bozicevich) brought home divisional titles. Our golf team (Coach Foreman) won the District 2 1A/2A championship and advanced to States as a team. Our cheerleaders (Coach Burns), the First Ladies of Damascus, won yet another county championship on their way to States. Finally, the Fall was capped by another magical ride by our football team (Coach Wallich and Staff) as they defeated Linganore in the State Finals. This was our 11th state title and 4th in the last 5 years.

As we switched the calendar to December, our winter teams picked up the success our fall teams had without skipping a beat. Tamrat Snyder (Coach Cason) picked up TWO state titles in the 500m and 800m (4th fastest time in state history) runs. Both our boys and girls swim teams (Coach Beabout) finished as runner-up in the state meet. Nic Santorelli, AJ Navaleza, Kaitlyn Hunter and Carly Sebring (TWO) captured individual state championships. The winter season was capped off with our wrestling team (Coach Furgeson) doing what they do best, winning state titles. It was the 8th Dual Meet Championship in a row and 10th overall. Aiden Beall, Michael Emerick and Timmy Furgeson (his 2nd in a row) all came home with individual state championships.

It would be great to have a third paragraph detailing our Spring success, but alas, COVID-19 robbed us of the opportunity. Here’s hoping we get back to a new normal ASAP.

The athletes at DHS provided us with great memories during the 2019-20 season. It was a pleasure to observe and enjoy the competition and the memories will last a lifetime.
